Field Categories

Understand the four field categories before choosing a field type.

Field categories help admins choose the right type of field. The student field wizard shows categories first, then the field types inside the selected category.

Use categories as a decision tool. Start simple, then move to advanced structures only when the workflow needs them.

CategoryBest for
Basic FieldsSimple inputs such as text, dates, choices, files, and numbers.
Compound FieldsReady made groups of related subfields.
Repeating FieldsReady made history-style entries that users can add more than once.
Custom FieldsAdvanced address, grouped, and repeating structures.

Good Category Choice

Choose the simplest category that captures the information clearly.

  1. Use Basic Fields for most student and application information.
  2. Use Compound Fields when a ready made group matches the exact information you need.
  3. Use Repeating Fields when users need to add several entries of the same kind.
  4. Use Custom Fields when the simpler categories do not fit.
